Maintenance & Lawn Preservation FAQs
-
How often should I mow my lawn for optimal health?
It depends on how long you want your grass and the season but generally you should never be cutting more than 1/3 of the grass’s length at one time for maintenance cuts.
-
What’s the best way to prevent weeds in my yard?
Apply pre-emergent herbicides in early spring, or when necessary, use 2–3 inches of mulch in garden beds, and maintain a thick, healthy lawn to crowd out weeds naturally.
-
Should I water my lawn daily?
No, water deeply (1–1.5 inches) 2–3 times per week to encourage deep roots, rather than shallow daily watering that promotes drought sensitivity.
-
Why is my grass turning brown/yellow?
Brown/yellow grass can signal improper watering, fungal disease, insect damage, or over-fertilization. Adjust watering and fertilization and consider pesticides.
-
When is the best time to fertilize my lawn?
Fertilize cool-season grasses in early spring and fall, and warm-season grasses in late spring through summer, avoiding fertilization in extreme heat to prevent burn.
-
How should I prepare my lawn for winter?
Aerate and fertilize in early fall, remove leaves promptly, and winterize irrigation systems to protect grass from freezing damage.
-
What spring landscaping tasks should I prioritize?
Start with debris cleanup, prune dead branches, apply fresh mulch, and use pre-emergent herbicides for early weed control.
-
Is fall a good time for landscaping projects?
Yes, fall’s mild weather is perfect for planting trees/shrubs and over-seeding lawns for stronger spring growth, but not ideal for projects like mulching because of the falling leaves.
-
How can I protect my plants during extreme heat?
Apply 2–3 inches of mulch, water deeply in the early morning, and use shade cloth or temporary covers for sensitive plants.
